On March 13, 2024, the University of Birmingham proudly hosted its inaugural Horizon Europe Insights Day, a landmark event that brought together researchers, entrepreneurs, and government officials to explore the vast opportunities presented by Horizon Europe[^1]. This program, known as the world’s largest collaborative research initiative, boasts a budget exceeding £80 billion over a seven-year period starting from 2021[^1].
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, Professor Adam Tickell, emphasized the significance of the UK’s reassociation with Horizon Europe, noting the enhancement it brings to the quality of research which is already recognized as among the best globally[^1]. The event was held in collaboration with Innovate UK and the Department for Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT), marking a concerted effort to foster collaborative research and innovation[^1].
Professor Robin Mason, Pro Vice-Chancellor for International, and Cathy Alexander, Deputy Director (International Research & Innovation) for DSIT, were among the key figures contributing to the agenda, with the latter set to close the event[^1]. The day featured breakout sessions on key thematic and sector areas, followed by an afternoon opening by Professor Tickell. Adam Jackson, DSIT’s Director (International Research and Innovation), delivered the first keynote, with subsequent insights from representatives of the Russell Group, CBI, and Innovate UK[^1].
The University of Birmingham’s commitment to international collaboration and research excellence is further underscored by its ranking among the top 100 institutions worldwide, attracting a diverse body of over 8,000 international students from more than 150 countries[^1].
