ERC grants are available to Swiss researchers as negotiations on Horizon continue

The European Research Council (ERC) has opened its grants to Swiss researchers as negotiations between Switzerland and the European Union continue, with the potential association to Horizon Europe being a key topic on the table[^1]. This development comes after Switzerland was excluded from the Horizon scheme since 2021 due to a breakdown in negotiations[^1]. However, in November of the previous year, exploratory talks were initiated, signaling a possible re-establishment of Switzerland’s association with the program[^1].

Swiss-based applicants for ERC grants will be treated as if Switzerland is an associated country, from admissibility and eligibility to evaluation[^1]. The signing of grant agreements, though, is contingent upon the successful outcome of the ongoing Swiss-EU negotiations[^1]. The Swiss National Science Foundation has hailed this as a significant milestone for Swiss researchers, emphasizing that involvement with Horizon Europe is crucial for Swiss research[^1]. Similarly, the Stick to Science initiative and ETH Zurich president Joël Mesot have expressed their support, viewing it as excellent news for science in Europe[^1].

In December, a joint statement by university groups representing 61 research-intensive institutions across Switzerland, Germany, France, and the UK advocated for Switzerland’s reassociation with Horizon Europe[^1]. They urged the European Commission and the Swiss Federal Council to work together with flexibility and compromise, highlighting Switzerland’s role as a research powerhouse essential for Europe’s global competitiveness[^1].

The optimism surrounding Switzerland’s potential return to Horizon Europe was further reinforced by the UK’s bespoke deal to become a fully associated member of the program[^1]. This move underscores the importance of international collaboration in European research initiatives and reflects a broader commitment to maintaining scientific partnerships across Europe, even amidst political changes[^1].
