On February 1st, 2024, the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Europe community gathered in Bologna, Italy, to celebrate the installation of Renaud Dehousse as the new rector and vice dean[^1]. This significant event marked the beginning of a new chapter for SAIS Europe, with Dehousse bringing his extensive expertise in European law and politics to the institution. Having served as president of the European University Institute since 2016, Dehousse assumed his new role at SAIS Europe in January[^1].
The ceremony was graced by the presence of international journalist Barbara Serra, who acted as the master of ceremonies, and featured a roster of distinguished speakers. Among them were Alejandra Flores Renteria, the SAIS Europe student body president; Matteo Lepore, the mayor of Bologna; Giovanni Molari, rector of the University of Bologna; Vera Zamagni, SAIS Europe senior adjunct professor; Jack Markell, U.S. ambassador to Italy; James B. Steinberg, dean of SAIS; and Ron Daniels, President of Johns Hopkins University[^1].
President Daniels expressed his enthusiasm for Dehousse’s arrival, highlighting his role in enhancing SAIS Europe’s mission as a hub for education, research, public policy formation, and cross-cultural dialogue[^1]. The speakers collectively underscored the importance of cross-cultural collaboration in academia and celebrated the longstanding partnership between Johns Hopkins, the University of Bologna, and the city of Bologna[^1].
Dehousse himself spoke on the critical role of institutions like SAIS Europe in fostering understanding amidst global tensions and challenges such as climate change and technological growth[^1]. He emphasized the need for cooperation and mutual knowledge in a world where polarization is increasing, and he articulated his vision for SAIS Europe as a force against division[^1].
Before his presidency at the European University Institute, Dehousse was a professor at Sciences Po Paris, where he also founded and directed the Centre for European Studies. His academic journey began with a law degree from the University of Liège in Belgium, followed by a doctorate from the European University Institute[^1].
SAIS Europe, established in 1955, has been dedicated to international affairs and fostering transnational cooperation and peace. Its strategic location in Bologna serves as a bridge connecting various parts of the world, including its flagship campus in Washington, D.C., and its program in Nanjing, China[^1].
