The EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship 2024 is now accepting applications

The EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship 2024 is now accepting applications.

The European Union Delegation to Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), has announced the opening of applications for the prestigious EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship 2024[^1]. This fellowship is designed to recognize and foster the talents of young Canadian journalists, offering them a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience of the European Union’s institutions and media landscape.

Eligibility for the fellowship is restricted to individuals who are actively enrolled in a Canadian university or post-secondary institution, or those already active in the field of journalism, and who fall between the ages of 18 and 30. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents to qualify[^1]. The application package must include a sample of journalistic work related to the European Union or EU-Canada relations, a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae, and proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status[^1][^3].

The submitted journalistic work can be in any format—print, digital, or audio-visual—and should not exceed specified length limits. For print or digital submissions, articles should be a maximum of 1,000 words, while audio-visual entries should range from 90-second news reports to mini-documentaries of 4 to 5 minutes[^1]. The jury will evaluate submissions based on journalistic quality, rigorous research, factual accuracy, and relevance to EU and EU-Canada relations[^1].

Winners of the fellowship will embark on a week-long study tour to Brussels in October 2024, where they will visit EU institutions, the Canadian Mission to the EU, and media outlets. They will also attend the European Commission’s daily press briefing and benefit from a one-year CAJ membership or renewal[^4]. The fellowship aims to strengthen ties between Europeans and Canadians and increase awareness of the European Union among a new generation of Canadian students and journalists[^4].

The deadline for submitting applications is May 6, 2024, and applicants are advised that incomplete applications will not be considered. Submissions can be sent via email or mail to the designated addresses provided by the Delegation[^3]. The final selection of winners will be made by a jury consisting of EU Delegation representatives, professional journalists, and academics, with their decisions being final[^6].

The EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship represents an invaluable opportunity for budding journalists to expand their horizons and deepen their understanding of international affairs, particularly the dynamic relationship between the EU and Canada[^1].
